With full power loads, my son's AR and his suppressor sound about like a 22 LR rifle being shot. Will say that this is why the 300 Whisper/Blackout is so popular, you can stay subsonic and get the AR to cycle. The supersonic has more energy than a 5.56 round to boot. If you are really interested in subsonic ammo go with a 300 blackout upper as this cartridge has been specifically designed for subsonic applications. 223 is an fiddly way of accomplishing what can be done with a fast twist bolt action and Aguila SSS, or only marginally less with a suppressed 10/22 and 40gr match ammo. It is unstable and can cause baffle strikes. I suggest you go to and to see what others may have found to use to make their ARs cycle with a subsonic load. Except MAYBE for such use as taking out a street light before switching back to full power ammo, subsonic. It uses a round nose 100 grain bullet and is expensive. I load a 57 gr Hard cast, gas check bullet at 2500 and it will cycle reliably. To load subsonic (under 1100 fps) you will be hard pressed to get enough gas to cycle the action. If you are zero’d at 100 yards with normal full power supersonic 223 or 5.56 ammo, your point of impact (POI) with the subs will be about 9-12 low at 100 yards. Even then, with low velocity, you may still get key holes 100. There is a company selling 223 ammo that is subsonic and will cycle an AR. You will need a fast twist barrel (1/7) to have any hopes of stabilization. Very quiet using Trail Boss or Tight Group but it didn't even budge the bolt. This was with 55 grain bullets. This ammunition is designed to be shot suppressed (Silencer) and truly is. I did a few subsonic loads for my son's AR with a AAC SPR/M4 suppressor. 223 Subsonic Ammo That CyclesThis ammunition is not specifically designed to. I would suggest that as you work up loads, do them without the suppressor to make sure the bullets are stabilized, if you don't you run the risk of a baffle strike which could ruin the suppressor. You will need to use the heaviest bullet you can find that will still stabilize in your barrel at about 1000 fps. If you are shooting an AR 15 and want a subsonic load that will cycle the action, it is going to take a lot of work. Beck Ammunition Silent Operator series is engineered to run at Subsonic Velocities (just below the speed of sound) and to be shot with a sound suppressor.
